Is Botswana a safe destination?

Yes. Botswana is one of the safest countries in Africa and is excellent to travel around. The biggest challenge along the way is not safety, but nature itself. Wildlife roams freely, including on campsites and regularly on the roads. Respect for the animals, good preparation and following the park rules are therefore important.

Do I need a 4WD, and is a self-drive through Botswana difficult?

A 4WD is necessary for virtually all well-known safari areas. Destinations such as Moremi Game Reserve, Savuti, Khwai, the Central Kalahari and parts of the Makgadikgadi Pans can only be reached properly via deep sandy tracks and, sometimes, water crossings. With good preparation, it is one of the finest self-drive destinations in the world. We are happy to advise you on which route suits your experience and the season. We will also help you choose the right hire car. If we had to name one area where we would choose a Toyota Land Cruiser over a Toyota Hilux, it would undoubtedly be the Central Kalahari. On the deep sandy tracks and remote routes, a Land Cruiser can handle more than a Toyota Hilux.
