Is Mozambique a safe destination?

Accepted Answer

Yes, provided you visit the right regions. We focus our trips on southern and central Mozambique, where you can travel very well. Parts of northern Mozambique are currently subject to a negative travel advisory due to the security situation. Naturally, we monitor current developments closely and only recommend routes that are responsible and safe.

Can I drive an ordinary passenger car in Mozambique, or do I need a 4WD?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the route. For some destinations, an ordinary passenger car is sufficient, but for many of the finest beaches, national parks and more remote areas, we recommend a 4WD. Road quality varies considerably and, particularly away from the main roads, sandy tracks, potholes and unsealed stretches can be challenging. You will regularly encounter police checkpoints along the way. They check whether your vehicle has the required safety equipment, such as high-visibility vests, a warning triangle and other prescribed items. Always remain friendly and respectful during these checks and never pay a bribe. With the correct documents and equipment, checks generally pass without any problems. Where is the best place to hire a car?

In most cases, we recommend hiring a car from South Africa. There is a greater choice there, and many South African car hire companies allow travel to Mozambique. However, this does not apply to all of them. We therefore work exclusively with rental companies that allow cross-border travel and make sure that all the necessary documents are arranged in advance.  During busy periods and the absolute peak season (the dry winter months from July to October), hire cars are  scarce . Unfortunately, it is quite common for travellers who only start planning a few months before departure to simply be unable to find a suitable vehicle. To avoid disappointment and ensure that you set off in a car that perfectly suits your route, we recommend booking your vehicle  8 to 12 months in advance  .

Is Mozambique an expensive destination?

That depends on the region and how you travel. Luxury beach lodges can be expensive, but there are surprisingly affordable guesthouses, campsites and small-scale accommodation options to balance this out. Eating out is often inexpensive, especially if you choose local restaurants or buy fresh fish directly from fishermen on the beach. This makes Mozambique suitable for both a luxury beach holiday and an adventurous self-drive.

What are the most beautiful destinations in Mozambique?

That depends partly on which water sports you enjoy. Tofo, Vilankulos and the Bazaruto Archipelago are perfect for snorkelling, diving and kitesurfing. Tofo is also known worldwide for the chance to see whale sharks and manta rays. Gorongosa National Park, meanwhile, offers a surprisingly good safari experience and combines exceptionally well with the coast. Each region has its own character, allowing us to tailor the itinerary completely to your style of travel.

When is the best time to visit Mozambique?

The best time to travel is roughly from May to October. During this period, it is dry, temperatures are pleasant and conditions are ideal for a combination of beach, safari and watersports. From November to April, it is warmer and there is more rain. During these months, some roads may be more difficult to navigate and there is a greater chance of tropical storms or cyclones along the coast.

Which countries combine well with Mozambique?

If you choose a self-drive, Mozambique combines exceptionally well with South Africa. Many travellers choose a safari in Kruger National Park or a private reserve in South Africa and finish on the beaches of Mozambique. A self-drive combining Kruger in South Africa, Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and then returning to South Africa is also possible. If you want to combine Mozambique with Malawi or northern Zimbabwe, we usually recommend flying, depending on the time you have available.
