Is Namibia a safe destination?

Yes. Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa to travel through. As everywhere, it is wise to be alert to your personal belongings in cities, but during a tour of the country most travellers feel very safe. The biggest challenge is often not safety, but the long distances and vast, remote areas.

Do I need a 4WD for a tour of Namibia?

Accepted Answer

For most places, it is recommended. Most of the well-known highlights, such as Etosha National Park, Swakopmund and Fish River Canyon, are still accessible in an ordinary 2WD (although perhaps slightly less comfortably). However, if you want to travel to Sossusvlei, Damaraland, Kaokoland or remote parts of the Kalahari, a 4WD is really the only option. Together, we will look at which vehicle best suits your route, driving experience and preferences.

Are the distances in Namibia great?

Yes. Namibia is more than twenty times the size of the Netherlands, while fewer than three million people live there. As a result, distances on the map often seem shorter than they feel in reality. Many roads are unpaved and average speeds are lower than in Europe. Good route planning is therefore essential to truly enjoy the surroundings along the way.

Namibia offers options for almost every budget. Campsites and guesthouses are often surprisingly affordable, as are park fees. As many travellers choose a self-drive, you also have plenty of freedom to tailor the trip to your own budget.

When is the best time to visit Namibia?

Namibia is a destination you can visit all year round. From May to October, temperatures can reach as high as 40 degrees in October. It is dry during this period, making wildlife easy to spot at Etosha’s waterholes, but it is also so hot that walking in Fish River Canyon (or elsewhere) is no longer possible. During the green months (November to April), the landscapes are spectacular and activities such as walking are much more enjoyable. The best period depends on your route and interests.

Namibia has much more to offer than just the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei. Visit Etosha National Park for safari, Damaraland for desert elephants and rhinos, the Skeleton Coast for rugged coastal landscapes, Fish River Canyon for impressive vistas and the Zambezi region (Caprivi) for a completely different, greener side of Namibia, with rivers and abundant wildlife.

In our view, Namibia is one of Africa’s best camping destinations. The campsites are generally spacious, excellently maintained and often equipped with surprisingly good facilities. In many places, you have your own braai area, electricity hook-up and water point, while swimming pools and good sanitary facilities are more the rule than the exception. Whether you travel with a rooftop tent, 4WD camper or ordinary hire car combined with a permanent tent, camping in Namibia is comfortable and brings you close to nature. It is precisely the combination of space, tranquillity and beautiful locations that makes camping here so special.
