The Brandberg combines a range of experiences in one place. It is home to Namibia's highest mountain, ancient rock paintings, impressive granite formations and one of the best areas for searching for  desert elephants . It is this combination that makes the Brandberg an ideal stopover during a journey through Damaraland.

Can you look for desert elephants yourself?

Accepted Answer

Yes. From the campsite at White Lady Lodge, you can drive straight into the dry bed of the  Ugab River  . This is one of the areas where desert elephants are regularly spotted. However, it is important that you have experience driving in  deep, soft sand . Conditions can be quite challenging. Are you unsure? Then we recommend booking a guided elephant safari through the lodge. The local guides know exactly where the elephants are at that time.

Is the White Lady rock painting worth visiting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The famous  White Lady  is one of southern Africa's best-known rock paintings and is located in the Tsisab Gorge of the Brandberg massif. The walk takes you through an impressive granite landscape while also offering a fascinating insight into the geology, flora and history of this unique area. The walk is  only possible with a registered local guide . On arrival at Brandberg Rest Camp, you will be assigned a guide; booking in advance is usually not necessary. Along the way, the guide will tell you not only about the famous White Lady, but also about the many other rock paintings and the culture of the San. The proceeds from the compulsory guide fee go directly to the local community.

We have stayed for several nights at  Brandberg White Lady Lodge  and know the area both from the campsite and from the lodge. This means we know just how special it is to drive into the Ugab riverbed early in the morning in search of desert elephants and  can advise not only on where best to stay, but also on how to combine the Brandberg most effectively with destinations such as Spitzkoppe, Twyfelfontein and the Skeleton Coast.
