It is home to the highest mountain in Namibia , ancient rock paintings, impressive granite formations and one of the best areas for looking for  desert elephants . That combination makes the Brandberg an ideal stopover during a journey through Damaraland .

Can you look for desert elephants yourself?

Yes, from the campsite at White Lady Lodge, you can drive straight into the dry bed of the  Ugab River  . This is one of the areas where desert elephants are regularly seen. However, it is important to have experience driving in  deep, loose sand . Conditions can be quite challenging. Not sure? Then we recommend booking a guided elephant safari through the lodge. The local guides know exactly where the elephants are at that moment.

Is the White Lady rock painting worth visiting?

Yes, the famous  White Lady  is one of the best-known rock paintings in southern Africa and is located in the Tsisab Gorge of the Brandberg Massif. The walk takes you through an impressive granite landscape while also offering a fascinating insight into the geology, flora and history of this remarkable area. The walk is  only possible with a registered local guide . On arrival at Brandberg Rest Camp, you will be assigned a guide; booking in advance is usually not necessary. Along the way, the guide will tell you not only about the famous White Lady, but also about the many other rock paintings and the culture of the San. The proceeds from the compulsory guide fee go directly to the local community.

We have stayed for several nights at  Brandberg White Lady Lodge  and know the area both from the campsite and from the lodge. Precisely because of this, we know how special it is to drive into the Ugab riverbed early in the morning in search of desert elephants and  can advise you not only on where best to stay, but also on how to combine the Brandberg most beautifully with destinations such as Spitzkoppe, Twyfelfontein and the Skeleton Coast. Can you combine Spitzkoppe and Brandberg during a trip through Namibia?

Although the driving distance is short, we recommend allowing separate time for both locations, especially during an African tour with children. The atmosphere is very different at each one. At  Spitzkoppe  you will ideally want to spend a night camping among the huge rock pinnacles, enjoying the world-famous sunset at the 'Rock Arch'. The following morning, you can leisurely drive on in your  self-drive  4x4 to Brandberg for a guided walk to the rock paintings and to look for the unique desert elephants in the dry Ugab River. Allow at least two days (and preferably two nights) to experience both places at their best without having to rush.

Is Namibia a safe destination?

Yes, a holiday in Namibia is relatively safe. Namibia is one of the safest countries in Africa to travel through. As anywhere, it is sensible to be alert to your personal belongings in cities, but during a tour of the country most travellers feel very safe. Namibia offers options for almost every budget. Campsites and guesthouses are often surprisingly affordable, as are park fees. As many travellers choose to self-drive, you also have plenty of freedom to tailor the trip to your own budget.

Can I combine several countries?

Absolutely. Combination trips often make a self-drive even more special. For example, consider South Africa with Eswatini and Mozambique, Botswana with Zimbabwe or Namibia, or Zimbabwe with Zambia. We look not only at which countries work well together, but above all at the time you have available. We do not believe in spending seven hours or more in the car every day. As far as we are concerned, travelling through Africa is not just about being on the road, but about taking the time to truly experience a destination. That is why we sometimes recommend discovering only part of a country or combining two countries. If you have more time available, it can be particularly special to explore one or two countries in much greater depth, leaving room along the way for safaris, walks, encounters and unexpected stops.
