How many days do you need for Gorongos National Park?

Gorongosa National Park lies off the usual tourist routes, approximately 400 kilometres north of Inhassoro. Part of the route there takes you along busy and less-than-ideal roads, so you should allow plenty of time for the journey. Precisely because of its remote location and the range of activities, we recommend staying for at least two to three nights. This gives you time for both morning and afternoon game drives, allows you to discover the park’s different landscapes at a relaxed pace and potentially visit Mount Gorongosa as well.

Can you self-drive in Gorongosa National Park

Accepted Answer

No. At present, self-drives are not permitted in the national park. You explore Gorongosa on guided morning and afternoon game drives in vehicles belonging to the park or your lodge. We found this worked particularly well here, as the guides know the vast area extremely well.

Which animals can you see in Gorongosa National Park?

Accepted Answer

The park has large populations of waterbuck, impala, sable antelope, nyala and buffalo. You may also encounter elephants, lions, wild dogs, hippos and crocodiles. The huge numbers of waterbuck on the floodplains around Lake Urema are particularly characteristic of Gorongosa. More than 65,000 were recorded during the 2024 census.

Yes, provided you visit the right regions. We focus our trips on southern and central Mozambique, where you can travel very well. Parts of northern Mozambique are currently subject to a negative travel advisory due to the security situation. Naturally, we monitor current developments closely and only recommend routes that are responsible and safe.

Is Mozambique an expensive destination?

That depends on the region and how you travel. Luxury beach lodges can be expensive, but there are surprisingly affordable guesthouses, campsites and small-scale accommodation options to balance this out. Eating out is often inexpensive, especially if you choose local restaurants or buy fresh fish directly from fishermen on the beach. This makes Mozambique suitable for both a luxury beach holiday and an adventurous self-drive.

Can I drive an ordinary passenger car in Mozambique, or do I need a 4WD?

That depends on the route. For some destinations, an ordinary passenger car is sufficient, but for many of the finest beaches, national parks and more remote areas, we recommend a 4WD. Road quality varies considerably and, particularly away from the main roads, sandy tracks, potholes and unsealed stretches can be challenging. You will regularly encounter police checkpoints along the way. They check whether your vehicle has the required safety equipment, such as high-visibility vests, a warning triangle and other prescribed items. Always remain friendly and respectful during these checks and never pay a bribe. With the correct documents and equipment, checks generally pass without any problems.
