What makes Great Zimbabwe so special compared with other African attractions?

It is the largest stone structure in Africa south of the Sahara, built between the 11th and 15th centuries. What makes the craftsmanship truly incredible is that the gigantic granite walls were built without using mortar or cement (dry stacking). The country of Zimbabwe even owes its name to this place:  Dzimba-dza-mabwe means ‘houses of stone’ in Shona.

Is it necessary to hire a guide at the ruins?

Although you are allowed to walk around independently, we strongly recommend hiring a local guide. The ruins are divided into three major complexes (the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure and the Valley Ruins). Without a guide, you will miss the fascinating stories about the kings, the spiritual significance of the iconic  Zimbabwe Birds  and the clever acoustics used to communicate with the people. Moreover, by hiring a guide, you contribute to local  employment.

Why does Great Zimbabwe attract so few visitors?

Due to Zimbabwe’s political and economic history, tourism to the country remained limited for many years. Most travellers visit only Victoria Falls or Hwange. The great advantage for you is that you will not find mass tourism here. Whereas at Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat you queue with thousands of tourists, you often share this impressive World Heritage Site with just a handful of other travellers.

Lake Mutirikwi (formerly known as Lake Kyle) is just a short drive from the ruins and offers a beautiful, peaceful contrast to the historic site. The lake shores are surrounded by green hills, with a small game reserve next to them.

What is the route from Great Zimbabwe to Harare like?

The drive from Masvingo to the capital, Harare, is mostly along the A4 highway. The road is generally reasonably well surfaced, but always be alert for potholes ( potholes ) and livestock or pedestrians crossing the road. It is a journey of approximately 4 to 5 hours. Make sure you drive during the day; we strongly advise against driving after dark anywhere in Africa because of the lack of street lighting, unlit vehicles and wildlife crossing the road.

How does this stop fit into a longer trip to Mana Pools?

Masvingo and Great Zimbabwe are strategically located in the south-east of the country. Travelling to Harare from here breaks up the long journey. From Harare, you can easily turn north towards the untouched wilderness of  Mana Pools National Park  on the Zambezi River.
