The park consists of two very different areas that blend seamlessly into one another: the northern Hluhluwe section, with its densely vegetated, hilly landscapes, and the southern Imfolozi section, which is much more open and characterised by expansive savannahs.

The remarkable rescue of the rhino
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is known worldwide for its successful conservation efforts. It is the absolute birthplace of the rhino population. In the 1960s, the white rhino was almost extinct here, but thanks to 'Operation Rhino', the species was saved here. Today, this is the ideal place to spot these impressive prehistoric giants in the wild.

The perfect stopover
We think Hluhluwe is a lovely park to stay in for two days. It is just the right size to explore during a few relaxed game drives. What is more, it is perfectly located along the route if you are travelling on to Kruger National Park or travelling to or from the Kingdom of Eswatini (Swaziland). Hluhluwe also combines very well with a visit to the unspoilt wetlands and coastlines of iSimangaliso Wetland Park. In the surrounding area and within the park itself, you will find beautiful, intimate lodges and atmospheric campsites.

The best time to head into the bush
Although the park is beautiful all year round, the dry winter months, from May through September, are ideal for a safari. The bush is less dense then, making it much easier to spot rhinos and the rest of the Big Five. What is more, during this period the animals flock to the waterholes, creating unforgettable moments by the roadside.
