South Africa is so diverse that you can easily make several trips in one country. We drive our routes ourselves, so we know not only the well-known highlights, but also the small-scale accommodation, special locations, restaurants and wineries that give a trip its character.  Simone is a wine professional and worked several harvests at a winery in the Swartland. She knows many winemakers and restaurants personally and can therefore also offer culinary advice based on her own experience. We work with local entrepreneurs wherever possible and consciously choose authentic experiences that strengthen the positive impact of tourism. Which destinations do you recommend for a first family trip to Africa?

That depends on the children’s ages and your wishes. South Africa is an ideal first introduction to Africa for many families, thanks to its good infrastructure, great variety and the possibility of creating a completely malaria-free itinerary. Namibia is also a wonderful destination for adventurous families who enjoy setting off independently. Travelling with teenagers? Then Zambia and Zimbabwe are also fantastic destinations; a guided trip is a very good option. With a private vehicle and local guide, no one needs to worry about navigating or driving. The guide knows the wilderness like no one else, shares their knowledge of wildlife, culture and history along the way, and ensures that you can make the most of the journey as a family. Especially for curious children and teenagers, that additional knowledge and personal guidance often makes the safari experience even more impressive. During a consultation, we will look together at which destination and style of travel best suit your family, so that the journey fits both the children’s ages and the way you like to travel.

Which vaccinations do I need for South Africa?

Most travellers do not need any compulsory vaccinations. Depending on your itinerary, vaccinations such as DTP and Hepatitis A may be recommended. If you are visiting a malaria area, such as parts of Kruger National Park, it is wise to consult a doctor about what is best for your personal situation.

When is the rugby season in South Africa?

The Springboks' international season usually runs from August to November. Local competitions and club matches take place throughout the year. Once your travel dates are known, we can see whether your trip can be combined with attending a rugby match.

Is Johannesburg safe to visit?

Johannesburg has a reputation when it comes to safety, but with the right common sense, the city is very easy to visit. The neighbourhoods you spend time in are particularly important. You can explore some areas quite comfortably on your own during the day, while it is better to avoid others. We recommend always getting around by Uber (it works brilliantly and safely in the city) and taking a local guide if you want to get to know different parts of the city. A guide knows the city inside out and ensures you can enjoy all that Johannesburg has to offer without a worry.

Which neighbourhoods do you recommend for staying and exploring?

Where you stay largely determines your experience of the city. We are particularly fond of  Rosebank  (tip: stay at  The Hyde ) and lively  Melville  (where  Lucky Bean Guesthouse  is highly recommended). When we are in Rosebank, we take an Uber for every journey and make the most of the incredible culinary scene. Every neighbourhood in Johannesburg has its own distinct character: Sandton & Rosebank:  The more modern, upmarket and very safe neighbourhoods, full of good restaurants. Maboneng:  The creative, artistic vibe, with trendy galleries and plenty of great jazz cafés. Braamfontein:  The city’s lively and energetic student hub. Melville:  In terms of atmosphere, it sits somewhere between the more upmarket Rosebank and artistic Maboneng; wonderfully convivial and village-like. CBD (Central Business District):  As a traveller, it is best to avoid the old city centre unless you are out with a guide. Want to really get to know the city? Head out with a guide. For example, choose an impressive graffiti tour through the creative neighbourhoods, or take a day tour to Soweto and Mandela House, which can be combined perfectly with the Apartheid Museum.

How many days do you recommend staying in Johannesburg?

For us, Johannesburg is not a city where you need to stay for a week, but we absolutely recommend spending  2 days  there at the beginning or end of your trip. It gives your journey through South Africa so much more context and depth. Our top tip:  Only hire your car when you leave Johannesburg. You do not need your own car in the city itself; parking can be challenging, and you can get around much more easily, quickly and safely by Uber. This saves you money on car hire and means you can start your road trip completely relaxed.

What is another interesting museum besides the Apartheid Museum?

The Apartheid Museum is impressive and an absolute  must , but if you are looking for another fascinating excursion, we recommend the  Cradle of Humankind  (the Cradle of Humankind). This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located less than an hour’s drive outside the city. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, where the oldest human fossils ever discovered were found. Visit the impressive Sterkfontein Caves and the interactive Maropeng Visitor Centre; it is a magical place that literally takes you back to the origins of us all.
