Why is Liwonde National Park so special?

Liwonde is a wonderful example of successful conservation management. In recent years, several species have been reintroduced, meaning that the park now once again has a complete ecosystem. At the same time, tourism has remained small-scale. As a result, you can enjoy a peaceful safari here with excellent wildlife, without the crowds found in some of Africa's better-known parks.

Which animals can you see in Liwonde?

Liwonde is one of Malawi's best wildlife parks, and all of the Big Five are present. You may see: elephants; hippos; crocodiles; lions; cheetahs; black rhinos; African wild dogs; buffalo; various antelope species; more than 400 bird species. Liwonde is an absolute must for bird lovers.

Is a boat safari in Liwonde worthwhile?

Absolutely. In fact, for many travellers this is the highlight of Liwonde. From the water, you can see large groups of hippos, crocodiles lying on the banks, elephants drinking and an enormous variety of birds. The peaceful boat trip also provides a lovely contrast to the game drives. The National Park's boat has a quiet engine and carries a maximum of 8 people, making the experience even more special.

That depends on your travel style. V Liwonde Safari Camp  just outside the park offers a relaxed atmosphere, comfortable accommodation and excellent value for money. More exclusive and inside the park, you will find  Kuthengo Lodge  one of our absolute favourites. Its location on the river is beautiful, the safaris are excellent and, from a culinary perspective, it is among the best in Malawi.
