Why is Lusaka such an important stop during a tour of Zambia?

Accepted Answer

Lusaka is the geographical and logistical centre of the country. As infrastructure in the outlying areas is limited, almost all major roads run through the capital. It is also a logical place to stock up on large supplies of food and exchange or withdraw money before heading to wilderness locations where facilities are more limited.

How can I avoid Lusaka’s notorious traffic?

Accepted Answer

The best tactic is  choosing your location and timing . Plan your guesthouse on the side of the city from which you need to leave the following morning. Heading east (South Luangwa)? Then stay on the eastern side. Also make sure you either set off very early (before 06:30) or only after the morning rush hour (after 09:00). Sundays are generally quieter. If you are travelling to South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi, we recommend allowing two days for the journey (unless you are travelling with a guide/driver). Large sections of the roads to the wildlife parks have deep potholes, meaning you need to drive slowly.

Is it safe to drive yourself in Lusaka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is relatively safe, but it does require your utmost concentration. Local minibuses ( combis ) stop unexpectedly and traffic pushes aggressively ahead at roundabouts. Keep your doors locked and windows mostly closed, and do not leave valuables in view.

Where is the best place to do my shopping in Lusaka?

Accepted Answer

Lusaka has excellent, modern shopping centres that are on a par with European standards. Highly recommended are  Manda Hill Mall  and  Levy Junction Mall . Here you will find hypermarkets such as  Shoprite  and  Pick n Pay  where you can stock up on a huge range of fresh meat, vegetables, drinking water and camping supplies. Depending on where you are staying and whether you are driving yourself or travelling with a guide, we advise you on the best time and place to do your shopping.

Why is there no direct route between South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi?

As the crow flies, these parks are not all that far apart, but the landscape between them consists of the rugged, inhospitable Muchinga Escarpment and deep river valleys without bridges. The few unpaved tracks that exist are often impassable or risky even for experienced 4x4 drivers. The paved  Great East Road via Lusaka  is therefore the fastest and most comfortable option.
