This mystical area is not only a geological wonder, but is also home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of ancient San rock art and is the final resting place of the historical figure Cecil Rhodes, atop the legendary hill 'World’s View'.

Come face to face with rhinos on foot

Alongside its rich culture and history, Matobos is one of Zimbabwe’s most important and best-protected rhino reserves. In our view, the absolute highlight of this park is the opportunity to go on a walking safari led by an experienced local guide. The moment you leave the vehicle and walk silently across the granite rocks to come face to face with a wild rhino at a distance of just a few metres is an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Our honest take on the wildlife

If you come to Matobos expecting to tick the traditional 'Big Five' off your list in a few hours, then, to be honest, this park is not the best choice. Predators such as lions and elephants are rarely found here for ecological reasons. You visit Matobos for something else: the incredible population of leopards hiding among the rocks, the impressive birdlife and the serene, almost otherworldly tranquillity of the landscape.

Because so very few tourists visit, the ranger at the entrance may be almost surprised when you arrive as a visitor. This creates a fantastic sense of exclusivity, but also brings a challenge: do you want to be absolutely certain that a ranger will be available for that unforgettable walking safari with rhinos? Then it really is advisable to check and book this well in advance.
