In the sun-drenched heart of the Namib Desert, the gigantic granite rock peaks of Spitzkoppe rise spectacularly from the golden-yellow plain. This iconic mountain range, with a main peak reaching an impressive 1,728 metres high, is also known as the ‘Matterhorn of Namibia’ because of its sharp silhouette. It is without doubt one of Namibia’s most photogenic landscapes.

Besides its natural splendour, Spitzkoppe also has a rich history. Together with a local guide, you can admire ancient cultural treasures: impressive rock paintings by the San (Bushmen)that are sometimes thousands of years old.

At sunset the landscape becomes a living painting. The setting sun bathes the granite domes in a deep, golden-orange glow. The campsite is rustic and simple, with no view of your neighbours and beautifully tucked away among the rocks. There is no running water, but at the park entrance there is a toilet block where you can do the washing-up and take a shower in the morning.

Because there is virtually no light pollution in this remote area, the sky above Spitzkoppe is one of the clearest starry skies you can imagine. With the Milky Way stretching out so brightly and tangibly above you, camping becomes even more magical.
