In addition to quad biking through the desert dunes and canoeing and 4x4 tours, you can also go sandboarding here (sliding down the dunes on a board, either lying down or standing up), go skydiving over the desert or book the fascinating  Living Desert Tour  . During this final tour, you set out with a guide in search of the ‘Little Five’ (small desert animals such as the impressive desert gecko and the sidewinder adder).

What can I expect from a day trip to Sandwich Harbour?

We certainly recommend a day trip to Sandwich Harbour, but not in a hire car. It is best to visit Sandwich Harbour with an experienced guide. This is where the gigantic, golden-yellow dunes of the Namib Desert meet the wild ocean directly. As you have to drive along the beach and through the extremely steep dunes, hire cars are not permitted.  You can combine the trip to Sandwich Harbour with  canoeing at Pelican Point . Here, you paddle a sea kayak among thousands of curious Cape fur seals that playfully swim around your kayak and sometimes even nibble at your paddle. After lunch on the beach, you switch to the guide’s 4x4 vehicle to tackle the spectacular dunes of Sandwich Harbour for the rest of the afternoon.

Do I need to book restaurants such as The Tug in advance?

Yes, it is certainly advisable. Waterfront restaurants such as  The Tug (Ocean Cellar) , are extremely popular because of the beautiful sunset views and the excellent quality of the fresh fish, oysters and calamari. These places are particularly full night after night at weekends and during the high season. You can easily book online. You do not need to book at The brewery; you can simply walk in. There is usually space available.
