The Waterberg Plateau rises around two hundred metres above the surrounding plains. Because the porous sandstone on top of the plateau holds rainwater like a sponge, natural springs are abundant here. The result is a lush, deep-green oasis full of unique plants and trees, creating an incredibly beautiful contrast with the dry Kalahari Desert surrounding it.

A safe haven for threatened wildlife

Because of its unique, hard-to-reach location on top of the mountain, the Waterberg Plateau has been declared a strictly protected nature reserve by the Namibian government. It is a safe haven for rare and endangered species. These include sable antelope, roan antelope, and both black and white rhinoceroses. Because poachers can barely climb the steep cliffs, these remarkable animals thrive here in peace.

Our honest view on wildlife spotting

Be aware that here you are not allowed to drive your own (hire) car to the top of the plateau. If you want to see the wildlife on top of the plateau, you are required to book an organised game drive through the lodge or park management.

Staying at the foot of the mountain? Then spotting large wildlife is difficult because of the dense vegetation. But down below, you will find something else that is fantastic: it is an absolute paradise for hikers and birdwatchers.

Hikes and the call of the bushbabies

Several beautiful, well-signposted walking routes run around the foot of the plateau and up towards the edge of the cliff. As you hike through the green forests, you are surrounded by more than two hundred bird species and unique flora.

The park is also known for its incredibly beautiful campsites and small-scale lodges, hidden among the trees. Camping here is pure enjoyment. As the sun sinks behind the red cliffs and the campfire crackles, you can hear the bush coming to life. If you shine a torch through the trees, you will soon see the glowing eyes of the many bushbabies leaping from branch to branch here. It is the ideal active stopover on your route from Windhoek or Erongo to Etosha National Park.
