Is a toilet provided in the hire vehicle?

The basic versions of most models do not come with a toilet as standard, but the Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4, CruCAM does come as standard with a compact chemical toilet ( Porta Potti ) included in the camper conversion. For all other vehicles and categories, a chemical toilet can always be requested as a separate accessory and provided with the rental. Simply let us know about this specific sanitary requirement when we arrange your booking, so our partner can ensure the toilet is ready for use in the vehicle when you collect the keys.

Is it possible to travel to Malawi or Zambia with the hire vehicle?

Yes, this is possible, but please bear in mind that the distances from the main locations in South Africa or Namibia are enormous. If you want a hire vehicle to be delivered to you in these countries, you will have to pay a substantial one-way charge ( one-way fee ) to return the vehicle at the final destination or have our partner deliver it there in advance. If you would like us to arrange an entire trip through Malawi or Zambia, we recommend making different choices from a logistical perspective.

Can I also hire a car for Angola through Beyond Routes?

Yes, it is. Angola is currently being developed extensively within Beyond Routes . We have travelled extensively through Angola ourselves and were deeply impressed by its rugged landscapes and the pure sense of adventure; in particular, we remember Iona National Park , the Colinas de Carulo , the untouched coastline and the impressive mountains around Lubango. Angola is still a relatively little-visited destination. This makes travelling there particularly special, but it also presents significant logistical challenges. Good camping and lodge facilities are simply not yet available everywhere, Portuguese is the undisputed main language and a self-drive here requires considerably more self-reliance than in our other destinations. Anyone travelling independently through Angola must be able to rely on their own resourcefulness in the event of mechanical problems or logistical challenges along the way. There is also a very important insurance rule: driving the notorious Death Acre coastal route with a hire vehicle is absolutely not permitted .

What is the fuel policy for the hire vehicles and how is this arranged?

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank and must also be returned at the end of the rental period with exactly the same amount of fuel. Any difference in the fuel level will be charged or settled afterwards.

What specific equipment is included with the Land Cruiser models?

The Land Cruisers are equipped with both front and rear differential locks ( front and rear diff locks ) for the most challenging off-road conditions. They also feature a dual fuel system ( dual fuel tank ) for an enormous range, a built-in water tank, a dual-battery system for the fridge, a powerful compressor for inflating the tyres and complete camping equipment including a sturdy braai rack.

What are the main differences between the Hilux and the Land Cruiser?

The Toyota Hilux is a modern, comfortable vehicle with very favourable fuel consumption and excellent handling on both tarmac and gravel. The Toyota Land Cruiser, on the other hand, is the unstoppable king of the wilderness. The Land Cruiser is heavier, offers substantially more internal storage space and has been deliberately built with mechanical simplicity, without vulnerable electronics, making it the absolute first choice for the most remote wilderness areas such as Savuti or the Kalahari.

Is there a limit to the number of kilometres I am allowed to drive?

When you book a vehicle through us, the hire includes an unlimited number of kilometres ( unlimited mileage ). You therefore never have to worry about additional costs per kilometre driven during your road trip .

Do I need prior 4x4 experience?

It is not compulsory, but it can be useful. The vehicles are very user-friendly and beforehand you will receive an explanation of the key principles, such as engaging four-wheel drive and the diff locks at the right time. However, your own driving ability, lowering the tyre pressure in deep sand and keeping calm often matter more than the vehicle’s technology itself.

Are we allowed to drive the infamous Van Zyl's Pass in Namibia?

Driving on Van Zyl’s Pass is strongly discouraged because of the mountain pass’s extremely poor condition, the complete lack of back-up support and the extremely limited access for emergency services. If, despite the negative advice, you still wish to tackle this pass, only Toyota Land Cruisers are approved for it; you absolutely may not enter the pass in a Toyota Hilux.

May I take the vehicle into the sand dunes in Namibia?

Yes, this is technically possible, but driving in genuine off-road dune areas is entirely at your own risk. The insurance provides no cover whatsoever for damage incurred in these specific circumstances. Any recovery and towing costs ( recovery costs ) will in this case be entirely payable by the renter.

Are the vehicles insured for off-road driving or driving in restricted areas?

No, the insurance does not cover damage caused by genuine off-road driving or driving in restricted areas. The insurance terms and conditions clearly state that the vehicles are covered only on recognised roads and tracks. These tracks must demonstrably be shown on an official map if you expect the insurance to cover any damage. Driving in places where no recognised track exists is therefore completely uninsured.

Are there restrictions on the areas where I may drive the vehicle?

Yes, certain areas may be excluded due to safety risks or insurance restrictions. In general, you may drive on any officially recognised public road or existing track. We will discuss the route with you in advance.
