Is Africa a suitable destination for a family trip?

Absolutely. Africa can be a fantastic destination for families, but the right destination and way of travelling make a big difference . With young children, for example, we tend to look first at destinations with well-fenced accommodation and wildlife parks, so that you do not have to deal with wildlife roaming freely around your accommodation. We also take travel times and distances into account when making the choice. If your children are a little older, for example from around 10 years old, many more possibilities open up. A guided safari in countries such as Zimbabwe or Zambia can then be a fantastic family experience. Together with an experienced guide, you learn an incredible amount about wildlife and nature, without having to worry about road conditions, navigation or driving yourself in challenging areas. During a Travel Consult, we therefore look not only at your children’s ages, but also at your family, interests and preferred way of travelling. This allows us to determine together which country and type of trip best suit your family.

Is a self-drive through Africa safe?

Yes, provided you set off well prepared. Most tourist routes are perfectly suitable for independent travel. However, we recommend taking local traffic regulations into account and preferably using Tracks4Africa or another navigation app with maps available offline. Mobile coverage can sometimes be limited, so a good offline map is essential. We also advise against driving after dark (and with a hire vehicle it is often not permitted either). This is not only because street lighting outside the cities is often limited, but also because people, livestock and wildlife regularly walk on or alongside the road. During the day, visibility is much better and you can also fully enjoy your surroundings. If you choose less touristy or more remote areas, good preparation is even more important. It is precisely there that having the right information about road conditions, fuel supplies, mobile coverage, border crossings and any alternative routes is essential. If you travel with us, we will discuss the complete route and the various route options with you in detail beforehand, so that you can set off well prepared and with confidence.

Is camping among wildlife safe?

Yes, provided you respect the rules. Camping in the heart of nature is one of the finest experiences Botswana has to offer. As the national parks are unfenced, elephants, hyenas, lions and other animals may walk through the campsite. With a few simple precautions, this is safe. For example, we advise always making a good campfire in the evening and sitting behind the fire and in front of the vehicle. If an animal does come too close, you can always get into the vehicle straight away. It is also important not to leave food unattended and always follow the instructions of the park authorities. Before departure, we are happy to share all the practical tips we have learnt ourselves along the way.

Is travelling through Africa safe?

Yes, provided you travel well prepared. Safety varies from country to country and sometimes even from region to region. Your travel experience also plays a role. If, for example, you have little or no experience with a 4WD, we will discuss how you can gain that experience, what to look out for or the option of travelling with a guide. During a personal Travel Consult, we look not only at the most beautiful route, but also at practical matters such as road conditions, travel times, seasons and your experience of driving in Africa. This ensures that you set off with confidence and are well prepared.

Is South Africa a good destination for a first trip to Africa?

Yes. Thanks to its excellent roads, good tourist facilities, wide choice of accommodation and impressive combination of nature, wildlife, gastronomy and culture, South Africa is the ideal introduction to Africa.
