The distances in Africa are enormous. What happens in one part of the continent therefore does not automatically say anything about a destination thousands of kilometres away.

Safety is relative everywhere in the world. It is mainly about knowing where you can and cannot go, which routes are sensible and what you need to take into account along the way.
With common sense and good preparation, Southern Africa is a wonderful and relatively safe destination for many travellers.

During our travels, we have now crossed quite a number of different countries and regions. That is precisely why we know how important it is to look carefully in advance at the route, the season, practical considerations and any safety risks. South Africa is densely populated, for example; in some parts of the cities there is security on every street corner, while in other parts it is better not to go. Namibia on the other hand, is very sparsely populated; the greatest danger there is driving too fast on gravel roads. In Botswana you have to keep an eye out for wildlife crossing the road. And in almost all African countries, you drive on the left-hand side of the road. You get used to that fairly quickly; we always say, do a few laps around a roundabout and you will remember. That means looking together at how far you travel each day, what the right route is and where it is better not to go.
