Of all the lions in Kruger Park there are four individuals that have a unique status worldwide: the wild white lions. These are the only white lions in the world that live entirely in the wild and not in captivity. For many travellers, spotting this remarkable pride is therefore the ultimate dream during an adventurous trip through South Africa.

Not a separate subspecies, but something of a sacred animal

Like the desert lion, the white lion is not a separate subspecies. As a result, they have no official protected status, although they are highly endangered because of their extreme rarity. Their coat colour is caused by leucism, a rare, recessive DNA mutation. This differs from albinism because the lions do have pigment in their eyes and on their paw pads. For local communities in the region, these white lions have been sacred for centuries.

The well-known pride in the park consists of the white male Casper and three white lionesses. Because Kruger Park covers an immense area and large parts are impenetrable, it is never possible to say with absolute certainty that there are not secretly more than these four white lions roaming the wilderness. This mystery makes a safari or trip through South Africa all the more exciting.
